How To Get Started As A Songwriter (My 3 Top Tips For A Healthy Songwriting Practise)

Have you ever found yourself staring at a blank page, unsure of where to begin with your next song? Trust me, you're not alone. Even after years of writing songs, I still encounter moments of doubt and uncertainty. But you know what always brings me back on track? Getting back to basics.

So, let's strip away the complexity and focus on the fundamentals. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, these tips will help fortify your songwriting foundations:

Tip #1: Get Comfortable Singing Your Songs

Did you know then you an only copyright the lyrics and melody of a song? So even if you do not play an instrument you can still write and register your songs!

Also, your voice IS your most powerful instrument.

Whether you're a trained vocalist or just starting to find your singing groove, don't underestimate the tool that your own voice is, it's always available for you to use to write with.

Use it to convey your emotions, tell your stories, and breathe life into your songs. And remember, it's really not about hitting every note perfectly—it's about expressing yourself authentically. It's about using it to craft your next piece, regardless of wether you will perform or record it.

So get warming up those vocal chords and writing your next smasher!

Tip #2: Schedule Your Songwriting Sessions (like, now!)

Waiting for the right time usually leads to us having no time. And when it comes to songwriting, especially in the beginning, we can find ourselves procrastinating and pushing that important songwriting session to bottom of the priority pile.

But we KNOW the key to progress is consistency, and consistency only comes after we start...

So, take a cue from your busy schedule and pencil in dedicated songwriting sessions. Whether it's 20 minutes or an hour, make it official and commit to showing up for yourself and your music.

Setting aside this time creates a sacred space for creativity to flourish and after a while I promise you that the songs WILL flow!

Tip #3: Invest In Songwriting Lessons

No songwriting is an island.

And it's rare that I come across a successful, prolific songwriting who hasn't watched a bunch YouTube videos, read books on the subject or booked a few lessons. So don't hesitate to seek out songwriting lessons, workshops, or mentorship opportunities.

And there are a ridiculous amount of resources available to you (many for free!) Online tutorials, workshops, local classes, investing in your craft is essential for your musician ship and songwriting growth.

Remember, every songwriter has walked a similar path, so don't be afraid to ask for help along the way!

As you head along your songwriting journey, remember to enjoy the process.

Songwriting is as much about self-discovery as it is about creating music. There will be highs and lows so celebrate your successes, and don't be afraid to laugh at yourself along the way.

After all, music is meant to be fun!!
